Girmay’s success is just a glimpse of the potential within Eritrea, a nation where countless individuals are trapped, forced into unpaid labor in mining and construction, and many are detained without due process for years, reminiscent of modern-day slavery—all to prevent potential uprisings against the regime.

The president often projects an image of humility and diligence by working as a daily laborer at dam sites. However, this facade starkly contrasts with his ineffective leadership and administrative failures. On the international stage, he pretends to champion progressive ideals and oppose oppression, yet behind the scenes, he collaborates with oppressive regimes. This hypocrisy has earned him the Italian nickname “testa di gallina” (the brain of a chicken).

Despite the oppressive regime, Eritreans continue to achieve remarkable success on the international stage. Biniam Girmay’s triumph among elite cyclists, who are well-paid, highly trained, and well-supported, is particularly inspiring. In contrast, Biniam hails from a place with no support system except his family, where people suffer under extreme control and basic freedoms are completely unknown. His victory is even more extraordinary considering that he comes from Eritrea, a country devoid of genuine leadership.
