“There are skilled professionals who, after being educated with public resources, go on to live and work in other countries. I call it theft,” declared Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. Instead of investigating the reasons behind their departure and addressing the root causes, he blames other countries for his administrative shortcomings. By doing so, he attempts to deflect from his own failures, showcasing a lack of accountability. It is baffling to see such a leader, who is often seen analyzing global geopolitics on television, failing so evidently in his own governance.
Do the Eritrean people deserve such a leader? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, because leaders are a reflection of the society they govern. Until society changes its values and culture, it will continue to produce leaders like Isaias Afwerki. To bring about change in leadership, there must first be a change in societal attitudes and values.
Intellectuals and skilled professionals are invaluable assets to a country, much like gold or diamonds. It is the government’s responsibility to support and retain these individuals. The current regime’s practice of driving away its skilled workforce, followed by shifting the blame onto others, only highlights the incompetence of its leadership.
in 2002, When Isaias visited students in South Africa, he remarked, “My friends advised me to tell you this: Tell them to return to their country after completing their studies.” He then laughed and said, “Today, it is easy to bring experts from Bangladesh for little money. If you leave, we can easily replace you with skilled personnel from Bangladesh. You can go anywhere; it’s not a problem for us.” This is the same leader who condemns the emigration of skilled professionals as theft.
If you do not utilize your skilled personnel, others will, It’s a straightforward concept that does not require complex calculations to understand.
Threatening, imprisoning, exploiting with low wages, and even killing intellectuals is not a strategy for national development. Effective management of skilled personnel requires a thoughtful and strategic approach. It is time for President Isaias Afwerki to step down and make way for more capable leaders.
